Council Districts in the News

Check out our blog: Huntington Town Council District blog.

Newsday endorsed Council Districts again on October 20, 2009

"Here we go again: A group of citizens is asking the Town of Huntington to let the voters decide whether to set up a system of equal-population council districts for electing the town council. This time, the issue really ought to be left to voters, not lawyers....Huntington is a modern, cosmopolitan town in many ways. It's time its form of government reflected that." Read more here.

Newsday columnist Joye Browne wants a vote on Council Districts:

"Let the people vote...Monday, A.J. Carter, the town spokesman, said that the town board - as a result of the successful petition drive - is now willing to put the measure on the ballot for a general election. In November 2010. It's nice that the board - finally - is crying uncle. But five years of foot-dragging is enough. Let the people decide! And that ought to be sooner, rather than one more year later." Read the full column here.

County Executive Steve Levy Endorses Council Districts for Huntington:

"The decision to support council districts should not be based on one's party registration," said Levy, a Democrat. "Democrats shouldn't speak in favor of council districts when they are out of power and then turn around and oppose the concept once they have gained power. The same holds true for Republicans."

The Times of Huntington (10/22), writes, "4,000 Sign Petitons for Council Disticits". Read the article and comment here.

The Long Islander (10/22) writes, "Nearly 4,000 Sign Councilmanic Petition." You can read the artilce here.

Newsday endorsed Council Districts for Huntington in an April 7 editorial:

"In an at-large system, challengers have to run expensive townwide races, with little chance of unseating incumbents. In council districts, challengers can win without a lot of money, if they work hard. Districts also help fix responsibility: If you have a specific council member representing your area, you have a better chance of knowing where to turn for help and holding that official accountable…we urge the town to put it on the November ballot and voters to give it a thumbs-up."  Click here to read the entire editorial.

Newsday article "Petition Drive Continues for Council Districts." This article (4/23/09) has a photo and coverage of one of our supermarket events. Click here for the story.

The Times of Huntington says "Ward System Drive Gains Support." This article cites positive benefits in Brookhaven from that Town's switch to Council Districts. Cick here for the story.

Newsday endorses Council Districts for Huntington: The editorial cited accountability, rerpesentation and the ability for challengers to run for office. Read the April 7 editorial here.
